Mississippi is named for the Mississippi river which forms its western boundary and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The state symbol is the magnolia tree and the weather is humid subtropical climate with long summers and short, mild winters. While Mississippi has been especially known for its music and literature, it has embraced other forms of art. Its strong religious traditions have inspired striking works by outsider artists who have been shown nationally.
