Originally home to Choctaw Indians, Lexington, Mississippi was founded in 1833 for the express purpose of serving as the county seat to the newly formed county named Holmes. Lexington is located at the geographical center of Holmes County and was named in honor of the famous Revolutionary War battleground in Lexington, Massachusetts.
